ZEbus Demonstration Program
The hydrogen-fueled Phase 4 ZEbus (zero emission bus)
powered by Ballard® fuel cells was the first
heavy-duty demonstration vehicle to be delivered to the
California Fuel Cell Partnership.
In September 2001, the ZEbus concluded its 13-month testing
program with the SunLine Transit Agency in Thousand Palms,
California, USA.
In operation, the vehicle demonstrated that fuel cell buses
can easily match the power, speed, acceleration, and comfort
of a diesel bus, with none of the harmful emissions.
The ZEbus also participated in the Michelin Challenge
Bibendum, an alternatively fueled vehicle rally between Los
Angeles, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada, USA held in
October, 2001. During the trip, the bus carried part of the
international media contingent and traveled over 440
kilometers.
The objectives of the Phase 4 program were to:
- Learn about fuel cell technology in real, everyday
operation, and to gain an understanding of vehicle
performance;
- Prepare the market for the entrance of fuel cell
vehicles;
- Educate the public on the safety and reliability of fuel
cell vehicles.
